The Strawberry Storage Trick That Can Help Them Last Longer

ou buy a box of beautiful strawberries, put them in the refrigerator, and a few days later you discover soft, mushy berries hiding underneath.

It can feel like strawberries go bad overnight.

The problem is often moisture.

Strawberries are delicate, and excess moisture can encourage mold and spoilage. A few simple storage habits can help you keep them in better condition for longer.

Don’t wash the whole box immediately
It can be tempting to wash every strawberry as soon as you get home.

But if you’re not going to eat them right away, extra moisture can make storage more difficult.

Instead, keep unwashed strawberries refrigerated and wash only the amount you plan to eat.

Inspect them before storing
Go through the container and look for berries that are already damaged, leaking, or showing signs of mold.

Remove spoiled berries promptly.

One bad berry sitting against several healthy ones can make the surrounding fruit deteriorate faster.

Give them some airflow

Don’t completely seal wet strawberries in a container with trapped moisture.

If your container has ventilation, use it. You can also line the bottom with a clean paper towel to help absorb excess moisture.
