I hadn’t fully absorbed her words at the time, though I thought about them often in the weeks that followed, especially on nights when I was still awake at 3 a.m. with three crying babies while Ryan slept soundly down the hall.
Then one evening, Ryan walked into the living room looking unusually excited.
“Honey,” he announced, “I’m finally taking a beach vacation. The guys and I are getting away to Seabrook Cove for a few days.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“What about me? You never even talked to me about this. I thought we’d plan a family vacation together.”
He laughed right in my face.
“But have you actually earned a vacation?”
My voice shook.
“Ryan… I’m taking care of three babies every single day.”
He rolled his eyes.
“I work. I’m paying for my vacation. You don’t have a job, so you haven’t earned one. I’m going without you, and that’s the end of the discussion.”
