Why Your Towels Still Smell After Washing — And How to Fix It

Have you ever washed your towels, dried them completely, and then noticed that they still have a strange musty smell?

You’re not alone.

Towels are especially good at holding onto moisture because of their thick, absorbent fabric. If they stay damp for too long, odors can develop and regular washing may not completely remove them.

The good news is that a few simple changes can make a big difference.

Don’t leave wet towels in a pile

This is one of the biggest causes of musty-smelling towels.

After a shower, avoid throwing your towel onto the bathroom floor or leaving it crumpled on a chair.

Instead, spread it out as much as possible so air can reach the entire surface.

The faster it dries, the less opportunity there is for unpleasant odors to develop.

Don’t overload the washing machine

If you pack too many towels into one load, water and detergent may not circulate properly.

The towels can come out technically “washed” while still holding onto sweat, oils, detergent residue, and odors.

Give them enough room to move freely during the wash.

Use the right amount of detergent

More detergent doesn’t necessarily mean cleaner towels.

Too much detergent can leave residue trapped in the fibers, which may actually make towels feel less fresh over time.

Follow the detergent manufacturer’s recommended amount for your load size and water conditions.

Skip the fabric softener

Fabric softener can make towels feel soft, but frequent use can coat the fibers and reduce their ability to absorb water.

If your towels have gradually become less absorbent, try washing them without fabric softener.

You may notice a difference after several washes.
