What Happens to Your Body If You Don’t Drink Enough Water?

Water is essential for nearly every system in the body. It helps regulate temperature, support circulation, move nutrients, remove waste, and keep organs functioning normally.

When you consistently lose more fluid than you replace, dehydration develops. Mild dehydration may cause thirst, fatigue, dry mouth, and darker urine, while severe dehydration can become a medical emergency.

Here is what can happen when your body does not get enough fluids.

1. Your Mouth and Lips May Become Dry

One of the earliest signs of dehydration is often dryness.

You may notice:

A dry or sticky mouth
Dry lips
Increased thirst
Less saliva than usual

These symptoms occur because the body has less fluid available for normal secretions.

Dry mouth can have many other causes, including medications and certain health conditions, so it is not a perfect measure of hydration on its own.

2. Your Urine Becomes Darker
